Hydrotherapy or aquatic physiotherapy is a form of physiotherapy treatment performed in the water.
Hydrotherapy is used by physiotherapists to:
• Decrease muscle spasm
• Decrease pain
• Facilitate higher levels of function without gravity
• Increase muscle strength and endurance
• Decrease swelling
• Enhance balance and stabilisation
• Improve enjoyment and confidence with movement
• Improve core stability
Hydrotherapy is useful for the treatment of many conditions including the following:
• Musculo-skeletal conditions (sprains, strains, fractures)
• Post surgery (joint replacements, reconstructions)
• Spinal conditions (acute and chronic low back pain, disc injury)
• Arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis)
• Osteoporosis
• Fibromyalgia
• Poor co-ordination and balance
Hydrotherapy may be used as a sole treatment or in conjunction with other rehabilitation programs.
